A pick up line is just a conversation starter with a little extra flavor. Used well, it breaks the ice, shows off your sense of humor and gives the other person an easy way to reply. Used badly, it becomes a story they tell their friends. Here's how to land in the first group.

What is a pick up line?

A pick up line is any opening line you use on someone you'd like to get to know, usually romantically. It can be a pun, a compliment, a joke or a plain "Hi, I'm Sam."

Most people picture the corny stuff, and that's part of the fun. But the job is always the same: start a conversation that feels easy for both of you.

Why use a pick up line at all?

Because starting a conversation with a stranger is awkward, and a good line takes the pressure off. It gives both of you something to react to besides the awkwardness.

  • It gets the ball rolling. You don't have to invent small talk on the spot.
  • It breaks the tension. A laugh, even an eye-roll laugh, relaxes everyone.
  • It shows who you are. The line you pick and how you say it are a preview of your personality.
  • It's easy to answer. A playful question invites a playful reply. Now you're talking.

What types of pick up lines are there?

There are six main types: straightforward, cheesy, funny, cute or romantic, clever and dirty. Each one sends a different signal, so choose the one that fits you and the moment.

Straightforward

No pun, no gimmick. You introduce yourself and say why you came over. It feels the most honest and works in almost any setting. "Hey, I liked your take on the band earlier. I'm Alex."

Cheesy and corny

These are the groaners, and they work best when you're clearly in on the joke. Say it with a grin that says "yes, I really went there." Browse our cheesy and corny pick up lines for the classics.

Funny

Playful openers that aim for a real laugh. They frame you as fun and easygoing, and they're great in groups or at parties. Our funny pick up lines are a good starting point.

Cute and romantic

Flattering and a bit shy. The goal is a blush, not a belly laugh, so sincerity matters more than swagger. Something like "Are you a camera? Because every time I look at you, I smile" does the job. You'll find more in our cute pick up lines and romantic pick up lines.

Clever and nerdy

Wordplay, science puns and math jokes. They're perfect when you know the other person shares the interest, say a fellow engineering student or a chemistry teacher. Try clever pick up lines or go full nerd with math pick up lines.

Dirty

Openly sexual lines. With a stranger, they mostly make people uncomfortable, so skip them. With a partner who shares your sense of humor, they can be a fun way to spice up your texts.

Which pick up lines work best?

The best lines are easy to get, kind, and a good fit for the person and place. In our own data, cute lines score the highest approval and mean lines score the lowest.

When we looked at 231,838 votes in our study do pick up lines work, cute lines earned 75.5% approval and mean ones just 41.6%. Lines of 70 to 150 characters beat very short ones. Beyond the data, run your line through this checklist:

  1. Easy to understand. If it needs a footnote, it's too complicated for a first line. Save the obscure references for later.
  2. Balanced. Not too cheesy, too long, too aggressive or too much of anything. A little charm goes a long way.
  3. Tailored. Notice something real: their band shirt, the book they're reading, the dog they're walking. A line that connects to it feels personal instead of copy-pasted.
  4. Non-threatening. The person should feel relaxed, never cornered. If a line could make someone feel unsafe, it's not a pick up line. It's a problem.

When should you use a pick up line?

Use one when the other person seems open to a chat: they're relaxed, making eye contact, or already part of a social setting. Skip it when they're busy, stressed or clearly want to be left alone.

Good signs: a friendly glance, a smile back, open body language, a lull in their conversation. Bad signs: headphones in, eyes on a laptop, arms crossed, visibly upset. Common sense covers the rest. Nobody wants a pun at a funeral or in a hospital waiting room.

Where do pick up lines work best?

Social places where talking to strangers is normal: parties, bars, weddings, classes, gyms between sets, dog parks and coffee shops. And, of course, dating apps.

  • Parties and bars: Funny and cheesy lines fit the mood. Keep it short, since it's loud.
  • School or college: Shared context is gold. A line about the class or the assignment beats a generic compliment.
  • Coffee shops and bookstores: Go low-key. "I don't have a library card, but do you mind if I check you out?" is the kind of cheese that fits.
  • Online: A different game. Your profile has already made the first impression, so your opener just needs to start the chat. Our guide on how to flirt over text covers apps and DMs.

How do you deliver a pick up line?

With a relaxed tone, a smile and zero pressure. Delivery matters more than the words, so say it like a joke you're sharing, not a test they have to pass.

  • Own it. Confidence doesn't mean being loud. It means not apologizing for being there.
  • Wink at the cheese. A knowing grin turns a corny line into a shared joke.
  • Have a follow-up. The line opens the door. Your next sentence ("I'm Jordan, by the way. What brings you here?") walks through it.
  • Be yourself. Don't pick a line that makes you sound like someone you're not. If you're shy, a cute line fits better than a smooth pick up line you can't pull off.

What if the pick up line doesn't work?

Smile, say "worth a shot," and move on. A no is an answer, not a challenge to try harder.

If they laugh but don't engage, that's also a no. Thank them for the laugh and leave them in peace. Respecting a rejection gracefully is the most attractive thing you can do in that moment, and people notice.

If they fire back with a comeback, even better. Now you're flirting. Curious what that looks like from the other side? Read how to respond to a pick up line.
